Ragi Ladoo

Nutritious finger millet balls bound with jaggery and ghee — a traditional Tamil Nadu sweet packed with calcium, iron and natural energy. Made for Diwali and new mothers alike.

Ingredients

Sree Kumaran Ragi Flakes, ground to fine powder 1 cup
Jaggery powder ½ cup
Ghee, warm 3 tbsp
Cardamom, dry ginger powder ¼ tsp each

Method

  1. Grind ragi flakes to a fine powder in a mixie. Mix with jaggery powder, cardamom and dry ginger.
  2. Add warm ghee gradually, mixing until the mixture holds when pressed between palms.
  3. Roll into firm balls while the ghee is still warm. Cool completely before storing. Keeps for a week.

Ragi ladoo with dry ginger was the traditional postpartum food for new mothers in Tamil Nadu — the combination of ragi calcium, jaggery iron and ghee fat supports recovery. Still the most sensible tradition.
