Kattuyanam Kanji

The red heritage rice porridge of Tamil Nadu's farming communities — naturally cooling, rich in antioxidants, and deeply satisfying in just 12 minutes.

Ingredients

Sree Kumaran Kattuyanam Rice Flakes 1 cup
Water or thin coconut milk 3 cups
Salt or jaggery to taste as needed

Method

  1. Boil water. Add flakes and stir continuously for 10 minutes until creamy and thick. Season. Serve warm with buttermilk or coconut milk on the side.

Kattuyanam — meaning wild rice — is one of the oldest cultivated rice varieties of Tamil Nadu. Its red bran contains proanthocyanidins that are traditionally understood to cool the body and strengthen digestion.
