Panagam
The sacred cooling drink of Tamil Nadu temples — jaggery dissolved in water with cardamom, dry ginger and black pepper. Served at Ram Navami. Naturally cooling, naturally healing.
Ingredients
| Sree Kumaran Organic Jaggery | ½ cup |
| Cold water | 4 cups |
| Cardamom powder | ¼ tsp |
| Dry ginger powder | ¼ tsp |
| Black pepper, freshly ground | a pinch |
Method
- Dissolve jaggery completely in 1 cup of warm water. Strain through a fine sieve. Add remaining 3 cups cold water.
- Add cardamom, dry ginger and black pepper. Stir well and serve at room temperature or slightly chilled. Do not add ice — panagam is traditionally served at room temperature.
Panagam is Ayurvedic in concept — jaggery provides iron and minerals, dry ginger aids digestion, pepper improves circulation, cardamom cools the system. It is the original Indian electrolyte drink, thousands of years before sports drinks existed.
